Grundens Dawn Patrol Jacket Review

December 21, 2017

Intro/Specs/Craftsmanship

My favorite types of clothing are not just those designed with a fishing vibe, but also have an appearance and fit that can appropriately pull double duty on the streets. The Grundens Dawn Patrol Jacket is just such a garment. Though technically made for fishing, it has the right look and cut to keep you warm (and looking great) on or off the water.

Material: Water/Stain Resistant Nylon with Hydrophobic Polyfill Insulation

Sizes: S–3X (M tested)

Colors: Dark Slate, Olive Night (tested)

Protection Rating: UPF 50

Price: $99.99

Along with the specs listed above, the Dawn Patrol Jacket boasts a full snap front, double snap wrist cuffs, and a draw-cord adjustable hem for just the right fit. For pockets, there's two flap-covered zip-closure hand warmer pockets down low, along with two open pockets on the chest that are each covered with a similar short flap. You'll also find subtle branding in the form of a Grundens logo on the left chest and right side of the back.

The outer material feels soft and very pleasant, while the black contoured interior feels even better. Quality rates excellent as the jacket is void of defects both inside and out and exudes refinement that I'd put above average.

Testing

Grundens says the Dawn Patrol is "shirt like" and that's absolutely true. In fact, I thought that myself when I first saw it..."this is really a jacket?"  While it has the same general look as a button-up fishing shirt, once I held it I was instantly reminded that yes, it is indeed a lightweight jacket! Like a good shirt, the cut is what I'd call somewhat "fitted" meaning it's streamlined and doesn't droop off of me. I personally love the cut, the ease of mobility, and the satisfying length for my 6'3" stature.

Though it's lightweight and on the thin side for a jacket, it's a perfect low-profile solution for added warmth when there's a chill in the air. I wore the jacket on a couple of fishing trips while out in California this fall, as well as here at home in Florida on some quick evening pond jaunts. It does the job well and feels extremely comfortable whether standing still or walking around casting a few hundred times. No worries if some errant water drops attack (or dive-bombing seagulls...see pic!) as the Durable Water Repellent Coating (DWR) makes liquid bead up fast and roll right off the fabric. When not in use, the Dawn Patrol rolls or folds up easily into a tiny shape which allows it to fit into a small hatch or boat bag.

Conclusion

Thanks to its great looks and extreme comfort, the Dawn Patrol quickly became one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I'm actually kind of bummed it's not cold here in South Florida very much because I'd love to bust this thing out of the closet more often! Funny thing is, I actually received mine from Grundens just as our "cold" Florida weather was ending this past spring, so it took me several months to really even get the jacket out on the water. At any rate, the Dawn Patrol doesn't disappoint me whatsoever and I think our readers would love it too!
