Grundens Breakwater Shorts Review

October 14, 2016

Think Grundens only makes apparel for hardcore commercial applications? Think again! At ICAST in Orlando this past summer, I met up with the good folks at Grundens to get the details on their fresh lineup of sport fishing apparel. Geared more towards recreational angling and casual wear, these offerings made a strong first impression and are undoubtedly a great fit for not just the conventional angler, but the fly angler as well. I was fortunate to later receive two garments to test out here on Demystifly, so in this review we'll dive into their stylish Breakwater Shorts!

Thanks to built-in features and technology, these shorts go far beyond the basics. Starting at their core, Breakwater Shorts are built with a 95% nylon and 5% spandex blend for a smooth, satisfying feel coupled with a bit of stretch. Grundens also makes use of their special TidalWeave fabric-weaving process which increases durability in key areas. Not only do these shorts offer UPF 30 protection, but the fabric is water/stain resistant as well. During testing I found the water resistance to be outstanding as water beads up and rolls off the garment instantly!

The waistband region features belt loops, a zip fly, and a button snap enclosure. Moving down the shorts there's two hand pockets with mesh interiors, along with a large single cargo pocket on the left leg and both a large and small cargo pocket on the right leg. Along with the twin right-side pockets, there's a neat integrated tool pocket that is lined with durable Superfabric material. I found that the pocket easily holds my standard set of fishing pliers. Moving to the back of the Breakwater Shorts, there's two large pockets with velcro closures.

On my 6-foot 3-inch frame, these shorts fit great and offer a comfortable length along with a nice trim cut that's not sloppy or baggy. The Breakwater Shorts can easily serve double duty both on the water fishing or while grabbing some dinner at the local restaurant. Grundens designed these with not only a high level of technology and features, but a high "coolness" factor as well that will help you look great no matter where you go!

At first sight I liked the Breakwater Shorts, but after wearing them I've been downright impressed. The cool, dry feel, light weight, water resistance, and fit all combine to make for a pretty outstanding piece of clothing. Build quality leaves nothing to be desired either, as these shorts boast tight seams and clean stitching throughout. The listed price of $75.00 surely isn't cheap by any means, but these are not your average shorts. Sizes range from 30–42 with four colors available including the Monument Grey color tested here.
