AIR Rods: R.L. Winston Fly Rod company has long been known for crafting some of the finest quality rods around. At this year's IFTD show, Winston unveiled a new ultra-premium rod lineup called the AIR series. These rods command a rather hefty price, but they also deliver a hefty load of advanced features.
AIR rods incorporate advanced carbon fiber with Winston's new SuperSilica resin system and Boron III technology, all of which help to increase the performance and feel of these rods. Winston claims these are their lightest, best performing rods ever. We can't wait to fish one for ourselves!
These stunningly clean, gorgeous medium-fast rods are equipped with chrome nano-lite stripping guides, over-sized chrome snake guides, and nickel silver with burled wood reel seats. All rods come with a green graphite rod tube and sock to round out a premium package. AIR rods are all 4-pieces and come in weights
#3–6. Suggested retail price: $945
Energy Fly Line: Fly line from Winston? Yep! These new fly lines come in fresh or saltwater varieties and appear to be backed up by some serious research and testing. Winston says that they used an all-new scientific approach and advanced analytics to improve the energy transfer between rod and line. While science and math tend to confuse me, one thing I'm certain about is that these lines seem incredibly refined and are loaded with features.
Energy Trout: Energy Trout series fly lines come in 2,3,4,5, and 6-weight sizes and are chartreuse with a high-floating 10-foot-long stealth tip that is a more subdued color to avoid spooking fish. The feature list includes a supple core, welded loops, and printed line identification. Suggested retail $99
Saltwater: The saltwater Energy line comes in a lone 8-weight size in an azure blue color scheme. This line is stiffer and touts a braided mono core, 40-pound breaking strength, special texturing (to reduce friction and increase flotation/durability), welded loops, and printed line ID. Suggested retail $99
