High-End Hot Rod: Sage METHOD 790-4 Fly Rod Review

June 29, 2016

The Sage METHOD series of rods has been on the market for some time now. These ultra-fast rods are made to be lightweight and capable of delivering flies in demanding conditions. I can't remember exactly how long I've been fishing the 790-4 model, but it hasn't disappointed. METHOD rods don't come cheap, but if you want to treat yourself to something very special they deserve a closer look.

The 790-4 is a 9-foot 7-weight 4-piece rod. The Magma Red color scheme looks incredible in direct sunlight and instantly identifies this rod from afar. Componentry includes a Super-Plus Full-Wells grip, fighting butt, black aluminum up-locking reel seat, Fuji stripping guide, and hard chrome snake guides. METHOD rods also make use of Konnetic technology for better strength, casting, and lighter weight. Speaking of lightweight (3 9/16oz), this rod is definitely that. It is both thin and very light-in-hand....it feels like a 6-weight and can be a blast to cast!

Performance-wise this stick shines with the right line. With a 7-weight line it feels a bit numb on short casts. However, the rod actually spends most of its time throwing an 8-weight RIO General Purpose Tropical fly line which helps load the rod much better for the short to medium casting I do on the beaches for snook. With either line the rod is capable of excellent distance with the right caster at the controls.

METHOD rods come in sizes from 4 to 11-weight with an MSRP of $850 across the board. Also included is a Fusion Red aluminum rod tube and black rod bag. If you like the action of your rods QUICK, the METHOD may be the one to pick!
