IFTD 2017: What's new at Ross Reels? Plenty!
Evo R Salt: A beefed-up version of the standard Evo R, this reel is well-equipped to kick butt out on the briny blue. Boasting a fully-sealed drag system comprised of 16 stainless/carbon fluoropolymer discs, it can throw down up to 30-pounds of drag pressure. Just like the standard R, there's a large drag knob (or as I call it, a wheel) integrated into the back of the frame. These reels are fully-machined from 6061-T6 proprietary aluminum alloy and use stainless steel internals for saltwater readiness. Opposite the canvas phenolic handle is a feature I've never seen before—twin spool counterbalances which should help alleviate any spool vibes as line flows out.
The Ross Evo R Salt fly reel comes in sizes 7/8 ($595), 9/10 ($695), and 11/12 ($795). The largest model weighs just 8.85 ounces. These reels are available now!
Evo LTX: Coming in April, the Evolution lineup grows even further with the addition of the Evo LTX. This striking reel is armed with a sealed drag system based on the Evo LT but is four times more powerful. Added features include a spool/frame machined from 6061-T6 proprietary aluminum alloy, canvas phenolic handle, large arbor with line channel, and a curved arbor surface for added strength and to help level fly line as it's retrieved. Fine for fresh or salt, there's a 3/4 ($385), 4/5 ($385), 5/6 ($395), and 7/8 ($395). These reels are quite light in weight, with all of them staying right in the 4-ounce range.
Gunnison: The classy Gunnison also hits the Ross Reel lineup in April. The frame and spool are both machined from 6061-T6 proprietary aluminum alloy, while the sealed drag is based off the Evo LTX. Although there's numerous round porting holes throughout, the frame and spool both sport that instantly-recognizable octagonal machining. Other noteworthy features include a canvas phenolic handle, small Colorado flag logo on the frame, and quick-release spool. Sizes include a 4/5 ($385), 5/6 ($395), and 7/8 ($395).
With the addition of these new reels, Ross is bringing their reel manufacturing fully into the United States. Also, remember that Ross donates 10% of every American-made product sold to the Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration program....that deserves a big thumbs up!
